I just can't get over the bling or color of some nice tasteful watches.

A nice watch is a nice watch. I wear for functionality and taste. I don’t wear for name brand satisfaction ( cough * Rolex) as honestly, the name is 80% of that $9,000 diver. But when I see something really nice and well done (Like this Vostok Special Edition above) I stumble when I see the color. I’m just not the guy who could pull that off. How in the hell does one wear attention-getting colors and not have a GQ monthly rotating wardrobe? Any normally dressed person sporting a glaringly colorful or screaming namebrandy thing on their wrist signals something wrong with that guy right away. So hows it done ?

That thing’s ugly. Rolex holds value over time, but yea just a brand name. My grandfather’s friend always gave him crap that his Timex could keep better time. He was telling the truth haha.

This orange Seiko is probably my ‘loudest’ watch. I wear it pretty often at my office job, mostly with the Gulf blue/orange strap. I think the NATO strap makes it a bit more casual. It helps that orange is my employer’s company color, but I wouldn’t hesitate to wear it otherwise.

This lesbian couple I used to hang out with once told me that I’m more stylish than most of the gay dudes they know. I enjoy bright modern streetwear and colorful shoes. Is there something wrong with me? All of this “too macho for fashion” bullshit that so many dudes are throwing around these days just screams insecurity. Seriously. We make our deepest secrets known when we make our loudest accusations. I would rock that on a yellow and blue nato no problem.

The real issue here is that some dudes are very caught up in adhering to their gender role so other neanderthals won’t judge them. Also... if you need a magazine to tell you what to wear, you probably dress like shit. There is a big difference between following trends and having style. Furthermore once you buy a few grayscale watches, you get bored...

But OK fine, if you hate bright colors, what you really need is the classic Amphibian dial with the Scuba Dude. Yes that is the technical term:

That looks incredible on the Martini nato! I say wear whatever watch you want, whenever you want to.

I’m replicating this in a month.

“sniper dial” 647. Meranom has the parts pictured to build this. I get the matching concept. I’m not one to really go too far in that direction. It just doesn’t appeal to me on the grander scale. I like nice things, just not too far out there. Not held by preconceived notions. The yellow isn’t too crazy, and I can absolutely see it with the right color shirts/pants/jackets, etc. Are those right color articles me? Not particularly. But the above image does it for me. After that one, the other could very well be a blue or white face, but clean bezel + leather. Something for the more dressier days of work/going out, etc. I’m just a moderate. Bright colorful shoes aren’t me.

I like the Vostok for the 10 year cleaning cycle vs. the 5-6 for the Rolex and it’s reasonably similar to timekeeping. For 1-5% of the price of a Rolex, I think it’s pretty nice for a crazy durable AK47 watch.

Yeah its interesting, once you start looking at people’s clothes vs. location trends start to develop. Loud colors and shoes are normal in some places, but weird in others. And its not a political thing either, the Vermont hippies can absolutely tell I’m from out of town just as easily as the folks in Manchester NH can.

As a joke I like to wear preppy colors like salmon or baby blue if I go down to Newport, RI in a tounge-in-cheek sort of way, because all of the Gen X yacht owners are walking around unironically in frat bro outfits like its still 1997. Boat shoes, woven belts, tucked in Polos. It’s incredible haha.

Same clothes in Manchester NH though? “WTF is he doing here!” I have actually started “dressing down” in more muted stuff when I go on Appalachian mountain drives, which realistically I do every other day anyway, to be less conspicuous. So the white leather jacket stays at home. But in Lowell, MA? I’m just another dude. So it isn’t really an income thing, its more urban vs. rural I think. IDK. Its late and I’m rambling.

That combo looks dope! I recently bought a very similar colored strap, gonna combine these two:

Thoughts? I wanted a nato initially but couldn’t find something that wouldn’t clash with that awful 70s brown, which is the entire point of the watch. That particular shade of brown on that strap you posted would be great too. Didn’t see one like it though.

It’s because you have swag! You’re comfortable in your own skin and rock clothes that others would be worried about wearing.

My white leather jacket is definitely a bit much, but that’s why its awesome. Someone complimented me on it just a few days ago. She had bright red hair. Life is short! So do your thing!!

My Rolex has worked perfectly fine without that 5-6 and increased in value by over 1000% since I got it.

Did you buy it for the value investment? Or the name? Or because it’s actually a decent watch that happens to cost a bunch? Common notions about the boom in the last 10 years is it’s a bubble due to social media and global connectivity. “World is catching up” It will be interesting to see what truth there is in that.

It will need service at some point. It will probably cost around 700.

As an investment piece, it seems logical to spend it, that is if you are ever going to cash in on that investment. I’ve a few friends that get things to collect and call it an investment but if they’re never going to sell it to get that return, then it’s just spending money and i tease them when they complain about coming up short for other things. lol

For myself, there’s not many rounded corners at work. What I get will get knocked around and used. It will be a working life. Patina isn’t a bad thing at all but I wonder how long that patina interest will last. Everyone right now wants original old looking things. Just look at the vintage t-shirt look for sale today...new. For now they want that....

Right now i’m not spending 9k on a watch because the sports Rolex pieces are the only ones that have some what of a guaranteed return, and if that even lasts is up in the air. I’ll spend the hundred or so on a decent looker thats rugged and lasts a decade or more before service.

id like to see that combo there. In a way the clash of styles but with attention to color compatibility would be the fun part. Now I wonder about a nato on a calculator watch...

I bought it because it reminded me of the watch a family member had and I liked the style. The value mostly came from the year and that it’s gold.

I don’t, however, buy watches that depreciate like a rock no matter how much I like the design.I’ll buy them when they’ve taken the hit if I really liked it, but most times I stay clear of it.

$700 is well worth given how much it has appreciated and even if it didn’t, the sentimental value alone is enough for me.

For watches in the Vostok price range, I find a Garmin Fenix to be more worth the value and better looking. Another example is this range is Movado’s. I’ll never understand anyone who buys into that worthless brand.

if you look at silver colored calc watches, I’m sure a nato strap could be found to easily work with it. :)
